In re: Animal Slaughter in Karnataka
The new Karnataka government should forthwith amend the previous government's legislation on animal slaughter.
That impractical law while banning cow slaughter (which is good) also put restrictions on buffalo slaughter.
However the state should NOT go back to the previous position. Rather, on balance, it should adopt either the:
- UttarPradesh model - Where buffaloes can be slaughtered liberally & OLD bulls can be slaughtered subject to strict conditions - an extremely practical one even post 2017 - what vigilantes do has no connection to the law, rather it is because of laxity of &/or connivance with law enforcement) OR
- Maharashtra model where cows & bulls are protected fully BUT buffaloes can be slaughtered liberally.
